Salve TJ, benvenuto su Romanticamente Fantasy Blog. Conosciamo la maggior parte dei tuoi libri, abbiamo scritto alcune recensioni e abbiamo adorato tutti i tuoi personaggi! Siamo fans dei tuoi mondi! Grazie per aver accettato di rispondere ad alcune domande sulla tua scrittura e sui tuoi romanzi.

Non hai di sicuro bisogno di essere presentato: la maggior parte dei nostri lettori conosce tutto di te, ma per quelli che ancora non ti conoscono, e vorrebbero poterlo fare meglio, puoi raccontarci un po’ della tua vita di tutti i giorni?

Certamente! Sono uno scrittore a tempo pieno e lo sono dal Febbraio 2016, quando ho deciso di fare una cosa un po’ folle: licenziarmi. Fortunatamente si è rivelata una scelta migliore di quanto potesse mai essere.

Mi alzo tutte le mattine molto presto, dal lunedì al venerdì, scrivo per circa cinque o sei ore. Alcuni giorni sono migliori di altri, ma in genere arrivo a scrivere circa cinquemila parole al giorno. Il resto della giornata lavorativa lo passo facendo editing o rispondendo alle e-mail oppure, onorando i miei impegni sui social media.

Quando hai iniziato a scrivere e quando hai deciso di diventare uno scrittore a tempo pieno?

Ho iniziato quando ero ancora molto giovane. Avevo questo taccuino, che di solito mi portavo sempre dietro ovunque andassi, appuntandovi ogni sorta di racconto. Ho continuato a farlo per tutti gli anni in cui sono andato a scuola e poi ho smesso dopo essermi laureato, anche se alcune storie hanno continuato ad accompagnarmi. Ho iniziato a scrivere nuovamente nel 2008 e finalmente mi sono focalizzato sulla storia che poi sarebbe diventata “Bear Otter and the Kid”. (NdR: “Un insolito triangolo”)

Per quello che riguarda il fatto di esser diventato uno scrittore a tempo pieno, ho preso questa decisione alla fine dell’estate/inizio autunno del 2015. Non ho detto a nessuno della cosa, nell’eventualità che mi potesse esplodere in piena faccia e non potessi lasciare il lavoro. Ero intrappolato in un cubicolo: lavoravo circa cinquanta/sessanta ore alla settimana per una compagnia di assicurazioni. Sono stato impiegato lì per quasi dieci anni e sentivo il bisogno di fare qualcosa di più per me stesso. Così ho programmato in maniera dettagliata quello di cui avrei avuto bisogno per scrivere full-time, risparmiando tutto il denaro che potevo, in caso mi fosse andato tutto storto. Sono stato molto fortunato, i miei libri hanno venduto bene. E ciò non voleva dire che lo avrebbero fatto sempre, ma avevo speranze in tal senso.

Avevo previsto di consegnare la mia lettera di dimissioni all’azienda nel Marzo del 2016, immaginando che darmi sei mesi di tempo per prepararmi alla cosa sarebbe potuto andar bene. Ma poi mi ritrovai a una riunione e fu orribile: odiavo il mio lavoro. Ho aperto bocca per relazionare sul caso su cui stavo lavorando e invece ho detto: «Sì, penso proprio di dovermi licenziare». Non so chi si sia rivelato più sorpreso, se io stesso o il mio supervisore. Ma ho tenuto duro e nel Febbraio 2016 ho iniziato a scrivere a tempo pieno e non mi sono mai guardato indietro, neppure una volta.

Sei un autore incredibilmente prolifico: quante ore al giorno trascorri scrivendo?

Generalmente scrivo dalle sette di mattina fino a circa le tredici. Lo faccio per quattro, cinque giorni a settimana.

Usi schemi, log-line, tag-line, outline o semplicemente ti lasci trasportare dal flusso dell’ispirazione? Hai una Musa?

Dipende dal libro che sto scrivendo. Se il romanzo ha molte scene d’azione, generalmente butto giù un outline di base. I libri come la serie “Tales from Verania” (NdR: “Cronache di Verania”, ancora inedito in Italia), o la serie di “Green Creek” (“Wolfsong” e “Ravensong”, già recensiti da Romanticamente Fantasy), con molti personaggi e più piani narrativi, in genere hanno un outline più approfondito. In altri libri, come la serie “BOATK” (pubblicato da Dreamspinner Press Italia, con il titolo “Un insolito triangolo”) tendo ad avere idee vaghe su dove voglio andare e semplicemente parto per poi vedere cosa riuscirò a tirar fuori.

Sammy/Helena, personaggio principale del tuo esilarante “La regina e il Re degli Homo Pomp”. Parliamo di lui/lei. Parliamo di tutti loro. Restiamo qui e parliamo di loro tipo… per sempre. Sto scherzando (ma nemmeno poi tanto: li ADORIAMO!) Come ti è venuta l’idea di Sammy/Helena? E cosa ci dici a proposito di quel gran figo chiamato Darren?

Il personaggio Sandy/Helena Handbasket è stato fin da subito in prima linea nella mia testa fin da quando ho iniziato a scrivere “Dimmi che è vero”. Sapevo che sviluppandolo, con ogni probabilità, avrei poi voluto scrivere un sequel su Sandy/Helena e Darren, così ne ho dato molto spazio nelle vite di Paul e Vince. Anziché personaggi superficiali sullo sfondo, avevano un peso nella storia, e sapevo che Sandy aveva bisogno di trovare un suo eguale, dato che non si sarebbe fatto mettere sotto da nessuno. Per questo motivo Darren è così scorbutico.

L’ambiente in cui vivono Paul e Sammy è un mondo incredibile e adorabile: per favore, raccontaci qualcosa di più su alcuni di questi meravigliosi personaggi. (Lo abbiamo già detto che li amiamo tutti, vero?)

Sono entrato in questo mondo per un’ultima volta all’inizio di quest’anno, quando ho scritto “Why We Fight”, che sarà il libro di Corey/Kori, e che uscirà la prossima estate. Sapevo che sarebbe stato l’ultimo libro di questa serie che avrei scritto così, sebbene volessi che Corey/Kori fossero il fulcro del romanzo, ho dato a tutti i personaggi principali una possibilità di brillare nel loro addio. (Persino a Santiago, quell’antipatico cameriere, con una cotta per Darren e Vince).

Scrivi così tanti generi differenti, ma anche nelle storie più allegre e divertenti c’è sempre una piccola quantità di angst, angoscia e sofferenza. Perché spezzi così tanto il cuore dei tuoi lettori?

Perché questo vuol dire essere umani. Ridiamo e piangiamo, soffriamo e amiamo. I personaggi che descrivo sono immaginari, ma voglio che possano sembrare reali anche di fronte allo straordinario.

Okay, adesso passiamo alla parte più succulenta: Wolfsong e Ravensong. Una serie fantasy incredibile, così piena di angst e di potere dell’amore. È un intero mondo con le sue regole e una nuova percezione della magia. Puoi dirci cosa volevi trasmettere con le storie di Ox e Joe? E con quella di Gordo e Mark?

Il tema di Ox e Joe è sempre stato quello della formazione e della crescita di fronte alle avversità. Volevo mostrare Ox, un ragazzo che viene dal nulla, e Joe, un principe e futuro re, che si uniscono per aiutarsi a vicenda a curare i traumi del loro passato.

Con Gordo e Mark, volevo cambiare tutto questo e in modo drastico. Joe e Ox erano innocenti, Gordo e Mark invece pieni di rabbia e dolore. Volevo esplorare gli errori che le persone commettono, mostrare che pure il migliore di noi può far del male agli altri, anche se involontariamente.

Quale sarà il tema di Heartsong? Puoi darci una qualche anticipazione? (Attenzione, Romanticamente Fantasy! Questo è uno SCOOP!)

Heartsong parlerà ampiamente di fede: di fiducia piena e della totale mancanza di essa. Ma terrò la bocca sigillata su questo libro, dato che cose molto, molto, davvero enormi succederanno. Ma posso dire che il mondo di Green Creek non sarà più lo stesso non appena questo romanzo sarà concluso.

John & Jackie: una storia dolce e malinconica sull’amore eterno che va oltre i limiti definiti dalla vita. C’è una storia dietro a questo libro meraviglioso?

Inizialmente doveva diventare una serie di libri autoconclusivi, ciascun romanzo a coprire un certo periodo nelle vite di John e Jackie. Ma per qualche ragione, non sono riuscito a farlo funzionare. L’ho messo da parte, ci sono tornato sopra dopo un periodo di tempo e mi sono reso conto che la storia non aveva bisogno di essere raccontata attraverso più romanzi. Se l’avessi tagliato, sarei potuto arrivare al cuore e trasmettere lo stesso amore eterno di una storia quattro volte più lunga. Qualche volta, il “di meno” vale “di più”.

Quanto di autobiografico metti nella tua scrittura? Tutte le tue storie, i personaggi e le ambientazioni derivano dalla tua fantasia o c’è qualcosa della tua esperienza di vita in tutto ciò – tranne ovviamente la sessualità?

Penso che ogni autore metta un pezzo di se stesso nel proprio lavoro. Sebbene non possa essere né Paul né Bear o Sam of Wilds, ci sono pezzettini  di me in tutti loro. E io ritraggo dalla vita reale, nonostante stia sempre molto attento a sfocare i contorni in modo da mantenere il tutto, per la maggior parte, romanzato.

How to be a normal person (NdR: “Come essere una persona normale”, romanzo ancora non tradotto in Italia): meraviglioso romanzo sulla a-sessualità. Le possibilità che diventi un film stanno ancora in piedi?

Gli ingranaggi di Hollywood girano molto lentamente, così non ho nulla da annunciare a questo punto. Spero di aver notizie migliori in un prossimo futuro!

Il tuo primo libro auto-pubblicato è stato “The bones beneath my skin” (NdR: “Le ossa sotto la mia pelle”, già recensito da Romanticamente Fantasy). In USA l’editoria indie è prospera; perché hai scelto di autopubblicarti?

Volevo provare qualcosa di differente. Sono stato tanto fortunato da avere le spalle coperte da un editore come la Dreamspinner e, come molti sono probabilmente al corrente, ho di recente firmato due differenti accordi per una serie da tre libri con un editore più grosso, qui in USA. Prima di dedicarmi maggiormente al genere mainstream, volevo prima spingermi a scrivere qualcosa che non avevo mai trattato e per questo ho deciso di auto-pubblicare “The Bones beneath my skin”. È stata un’esperienza istruttiva, che spero di poter ripetere nel prossimo futuro.

Pensi che potremo leggere “Bones” tradotto in italiano prima o poi?

Assolutamente sì! I diritti per la traduzione italiana di “The Bones Beneath My Skin” sono stati venduti, e mi aspetto che esca in un non meglio precisato periodo dell’anno prossimo!

Hi TJ, Welcome to Romanticamente Fantasy Blog. We know most of all of your books, we wrote some reviews and we loved all your characters! We are big fan of your worlds!  Thank you for having accepted to answer some questions on your writing and your novels.

You certainly do not need to be introduced: most of our readers knows everything about you but for those who don’t and would like to know you better, can you tell us a little about your everyday life?

Sure! I’m a full-time writer, and have been since February 2016, when I decided to go a little insane and quit my job. Thankfully, it’s turned out even better than I thought it would. I get up in the mornings bright and early, and Monday through Friday, write for about five or six hours. Some days are better than others, but usually write about five thousand words a day. The rest of the work day is spent on edits or emails or my social media obligations.

When did you start writing and when did you decide to become a full-time writer?

I started writing at a very young age. I had this notebook I used to carry around with me wherever I went, jotting down all different kinds of stories. I kept that up through my school years, and then I stopped after graduating, even though certain stories always stuck with me. I started writing again around 2008, and finally settled on the story that would become Bear, Otter and the Kid.

As for when I decided to become a fulltime writer, I made the decision in late summer/early fall of 2015. I didn’t tell anyone about it in case it blew up in my face and I couldn’t leave my job. I was trapped in a cubicle, working 50-60 hour weeks for an insurance company. I’d been at the job for almost ten years, and I needed something more for myself. So I planned out in detail what I’d need to do in order to ensure I could write full time, saving all the money I could in case something went wrong. I was fortunate enough that my books sold well. That didn’t mean they always would, but I had hope.

I was planning on turning in my notice at my job in March of 2016, figuring giving myself 6 months of preparation would be good. But then I was in a meeting and it was just awful. I hated my job. I opened my mouth to talk about the insurance case I was working on and instead said, “Yeah, I think I’m going to quit.” I don’t know who was more surprised, me or my supervisor. But I stuck to it, and in February 2016, I started full time and haven’t looked back since.

You are a incredibly prolific author: how many hours do you spend writiting during the day?

I usually write from 7 in the morning to about 1 in the afternoon. I do these four or five days a week.

You use schemes, log-lines, tag-lines, outlines or you just go with the inspirational flow? Do you have a Muse?

Depends on the book I’m writing! If the book has many moving parts, I usually at least make a basic outline. Books like the Tales from Verania series or the Green Creek series with many characters and plot lines usually have a more involved outline. Other books, like the BOATK series, I tend to have some vague ideas of where I want it to go, and just go for it and see what I come up with.

Sammy/Helena, Main Character of your esilarating The Queen and the Homo Jock King. Let’s talk about him/her. Let’s talk about them all the time. Let’s stay here and talk about them like… forever. I am kidding (but not so much: we ADORE them!) How did you get the idea of Sammy/Helena? And what about that hunk of a Jock named Darren?

Sandy/Helena Handbasket was at the forefront of my mind when I started writing Tell Me It’s Real. I knew going in that I most likely wanted to write a sequel about Sandy/Helena and Darren, so I made them important parts of Paul and Vince’s lives. Rather than cursory background characters, they had a weight to them. And I knew Sandy needed to meet his match, given that he wouldn’t take shit from anyone. Which is why Darren is as gruff as he is.

Paul and Sammy’s environment is a whole incredible and lovable world: please tell us some more about any of their beautiful characters (did we say we love them all, already?)

I stepped into this world one last time earlier this year, when I wrote Why We Fight, which is going to be Corey/Kori’s book, out next summer. I knew going into it that it was going to be the last book in the series, so while I wanted Corey/Kori to be the focus of the book, I gave all the prior characters a chance to shine in this farewell. (Even Santiago, that annoying waiter with a crush on Darren and Vince.)

You write so many different literary genres, but even in the most cheerful and funny stories there is always a small amount of angst and sorrow. Why do you rip your readers’ hearts so much?

Because that’s what it is to be human. We laugh and cry, grieve and love. The characters I write are fictional, but I want them to seem like they could be real, even in the face of the extraordinary.

Ok, now let’s go down the good stuff: Wolfsong and Ravensong. Such an incredible fantasy series, so full of angst and power of love. It’s a whole world with its own rules and new perception of magic. Can you tell us what you wanted to convey with Ox and Joe’s story? And with Gordo and Mark’s?

Ox and Joe were always meant to be a coming of age in the face of adversity. I wanted to show Ox, a boy who came from nothing, and Joe, a once and future king, coming together to help each other heal from the traumas of their past.

And with Gordo and Mark, I wanted to change that drastically. Joe and Ox were more innocent. Gordo and Mark were full of anger and hurt, and I wanted to explore the mistakes that we as people make, to show that even the best of us can hurt others, even if we don’t mean to.

What Heartsong’s theme will be about. Can you give us some anticipation? (Beware, Romanticamente Fantasy, this is a Scoop!)

Heartsong will be all about trust: the fullness of it and the lack of it. I am going to be pretty tight-lipped about this book, given that some big, big things happen in it. But I can tell you that the world of Green Creek won’t be the same by the time the book is over.

John and Jackie: a sweet and melancholic story about eternal lovethat goes beyond the limits defined by life. Is there a story behind this gorgeous novel?

It was initially going to be a series of full-length novels, each book covering a certain period of John and Jackie’s lives. But for some reason, I couldn’t make it work. I put it aside, and came back to it after a time, and realized I didn’t need it to be multiple novels. If I cut it down, I could get to the basics and convey the same eternal love that a story four times as long would. Sometimes, less is more.

How much biography you put in your writing? Are all your stories, characters and environments from your imagination or there’s something about your experience in life in all of them – apart sexuality, of course – ?

I think every author puts a piece of themselves into their work. While I may not be a Paul or a Bear or a Sam of Wilds, there are bits and pieces of me in all of them. And I do draw from real life, though I am careful to blur the lines to keep it mostly fictional.

How to be a normal person: beautiful novel about asexuality: the chances of this becoming a movie still stands?

The gears of Hollywood run very slow, so I have nothing to announce at this point. I’m hoping to have better news in the future!

Your first self-published book: The bones beneath my skin. In USA the indie book market is something prosperous; why did you choose to go self-publishing?

I wanted to try something different. I have been fortunate enough to have the backing of a publisher in Dreamspinner, and as some are probably aware, I recently signed two different three-book deals with a major publisher here in the USA. Before I go more mainstream, I wanted to push myself to do something I hadn’t before, which is why I decided to self-publish The Bones Beneath My Skin. It was a learning experience, and one I hope to do again in the near future.

Do you think we will be able to read The Bones translated into italian anytime soon?

You will! The italian language rights for The Bones Beneath My Skin have been sold, and I expect it to be released at some point next year!
